Nick thought he had seen everything after working at Harbour Street for about 8 months, but tonight he was a little out of his element.
a young woman had wandered in just before the doors close, most guests for the night were already signed in and getting in their beds, but she must have only just found the place.
Nick frowns from his place in ‘the cage’ where he keeps people belongings and filing cabinets. The women was wandering, clearly lost. He exits through the side door to the hall.
“Uh, miss? We’re all capacity.” He hated saying those words but if they didn’t have space, what could he do. He steps towards her direction. “miss?”
his heart spots when the girls turns, finally revealing her face…and a baby in her arms, cradled in a blanket.
“Miss…” Nick hesitated. He’s never had a women with a child here before. There was shelters specifically for those people, but they were miles away and it was the middle of the night.
“I…I need a place to stay…” her voice was shaky, but she looked well dressed, so clearly she wasn’t on the streets often. She must have found herself in this position recently. She hugs the baby closer, as if to protect them.
Nick didn’t know what to do. It wasn’t safe outside, but there wasn’t really a rule book regarding children…
“What’s your name?” Nick offers a smile, something warm and welcoming. The last this girl needed was something to intimidate her. “I’m Nick.”
