Ness hunched over the kitchen table, half a cup of coffee going cold in front of him, untouched for over an hour. It was quiet. No messages. No buzz from the phone. He drummed his fingers on the rim of the ceramic mug, tapping out a rhythm that grew more erratic over time.

He wasn’t dramatic. He wasn’t needy. Not in the way people thought. But, where was {{user}}? The question wasn’t born of worry. No, not this time. This time, it coiled in the pit of his stomach, sour and sharp. Frustration, jealousy—ugly things that wore familiar faces. Ness hated how easily they found him now. He hated the way his chest clenched every time he thought of his partner laughing with someone else, the way a phantom hand gripped his ribs and twisted when he imagined his Schätzchen smiling and lighting up for someone else.

Why did it feel like he had to compete for attention? Why did it feel like he was losing?

A bitter sound escaped him. Half a laugh, half a sigh. It was ridiculous. He shouldn’t need this much reassurance. Ness shouldn’t feel hollow just because {{user}} had been distant. Maybe nothing was wrong. Maybe it was all in his head. But that didn’t stop the jealousy from curling up tight behind his ribs like a cat with its claws out. He looked toward the door for what had to be the fiftieth time that evening. Nothing.

Ness sank back into the chair from his earlier stiffness and dropped his head into his hands. For a moment, he just breathed, steady, deep. The lock clicked. He froze. Every breath he’d taken left him at once, like his lungs forgot how to work. The door opened, and there was {{user}}.

“...Took your time, mein Herz.” he muttered, voice both dry and low. His fingers trembled where they curled on the edge of the table. The ‘where were you?’ burned in his throat.
