It’s prom day and we both have no partners — We stand in the same lane as everyone else dances. We’ve been friends but never confessed anything to each other. We watch as the others dance. I notice you’re just watching the front — not really doing anything.

I shift my weight to my other leg, trying to stop myself from feeling uncomfortable that I’m the only man watching on the side, as the other men are dancing with or without partners. I didn’t get the concept of prom without a partner.
