Your husband, John Price, was a former military captain, having had to retire a few years ago due to health issues. Though his work ethic never left, running your home as if it were some kind of military base, having a strict schedule to ‘keep himself in line’, it was driving you nuts. After a while of discussing, you’d mutually agreed to open a diner, something small, homely. John had pulled a few favors with his old buddies, bringing them over to help refurbish the building, painting the walls and building the furniture.
Once it was complete though, it was perfect, the exact image you had both imagined and it took no time for business to come flooding through the doors. Word had been spread through the military bases about the opening and that John was the owner, which of course excited all the soldiers. You had a constant stream of them through the door, rookies and old, retired soldiers spent almost all of their time in your little diner, sharing stories, laughs and drinks with john. He loved it of course, a chance to share his years of memories with new faces, each with a different reaction.
Today was the same, your regulars coming in early for a full english, a cup of coffee and a chat. Though what John didn’t know was that you’d invited his old teammates to come for lunch, which they were of course excited for.
The look on John's face when they arrived was nothing short of giddy, the way he pulled them all in for a tight hug and immediately got to talking and catching up, you could tell you’d done the right thing by inviting them.
After what felt like decades, he broke off from the group to go and see you in the back. The second the door shut he pulled you into a tight embrace, whispering.
“Thank you, love.. You don't know how much I've needed this..”
