The house was quiet, the lights were already out. Walker noticed it the second he stepped inside, no TV, no music, no comment thrown his way.

    Just silence.

He set his keys down, listening.

A faint sound from the kitchen.

The light was dim when he walked in, just the one above the stove. She sat at the counter, sleeves pulled over her hands, a glass in front of her she hadn’t touched.

    No phone. No music.

    Just… still.

    “Couldn’t sleep?” he asked.

She didn’t look up right away. “Something like that.”

    Her voice was off. Quieter.

Walker grabbed a glass, poured some water, and leaned against the counter across from her. Not too close. Just there.

    He didn’t push.

    Not yet.

“You’ve got school tomorrow,” he said after a moment.

She let out a breath. “Yeah. I know.”

    Silence stretched again.

“Wanna tell me what’s going on?” he asked.
