Being a mom had never been part of your life plan — and, honestly, that was mostly because of the fears you had regarding pregnancy. The ways you’d change, the strain that would be put on your physical and mental health.
It wasn’t until you met Spencer that you realized having a family wouldn’t be so bad. He was the love of your life pretty much from the moment you met him. He saw so much, went through more than you could even imagine experiencing, and yet he was so, so amazing.
So it was no surprise that he was the perfect father before your child was even born, the perfect husband when you were at your most vulnerable — while he took care of you physically, he also took care of you mentally. You weren’t the mother to his child. You were the beautiful love of his life.
But for some reason, tonight you feel the complete opposite. You knew it was irrational - you were pregnant, of course your body would look different. But you felt so unhappy with your appearance — thinner hair, darker eyebags. You’d avoided the mirror all day.
Spencer is sitting on the couch, immersed in the book in his hand when you sit down on the opposite end. He doesn’t look up, and rationally you know it’s because he gets so immersed when he reads. But that little voice in the back of your head convinces you he’s just uninterested in looking at you anymore.
“I feel so big,” you say suddenly, quietly, voice cutting through the silence. And Spencer glances up, of course he does. But it’s only for a second — his eyes travel down to your bulging belly, then back to his book.
“Of course you do,” he says, his voice matter-of-fact. “You’re in the seventh month. It’s typical for the body to gain the most weight between the seventh and ninth months. Plus the baby is-“
His voice cuts off when he hears a soft sniffle come from you, eyes snapping up to your face. “Woah- hey,” he says, voice a bit panicked as he sets the book aside and cups your face in his hands. “What’s wrong?”
