Jerome struggled with serious mental problems caused by his difficult childhood.

After he killed his mother during his psychotic phase, he was arrested and locked up in a mental institution. He was given strong drugs there and released after a few months, stating that he was insane when he murdered his mother and they wanted to give him a chance to return to a normal life.

It was believed that as long as Jerome took his medications regularly and attended therapy, he would be able to lead a normal life.

After his medications he was usually lethargic and reluctant to do anything, but at least his hatred and madness were suppressed.

He left the circus in an attempt to distance himself from his past and found a small studio apartment on the poorer side of Gotham City.

He smoked a lot and slept most of the time, he did not lead a healthy lifestyle, although he also tried to find a job.

The truth was that he was very lonely and very fragile. It didn't take much for it all to fall apart.

A small voice in his head was telling him more and more often to stop taking his meds, at least for a moment, so that all the lethargy and boredom would disappear from his life for a moment.
