The sun was low, casting golden streaks through the trees as the group finally came to a stop rest. Though, the sudden sound of your laugh made his attention immediately shift to you. It was the kind of laugh where your eyes crinkle and your voice softens around the edges.
And it wasn’t at something he said.
It was at something that other guy—some low-tier Hunter they’d met on the last job—had said. He wasn’t even that funny. Or smart. Or interesting. But somehow, he had your attention.
Killua sat a few feet away, arms draped loosely over his knees, chewing absently on a piece of chocolate he didn’t even want anymore. His electric blue eyes flicked to you and then away, jaw tightening for a second. “…Tch. What’s so great about him?” He muttered under his breath, not really meaning to say it aloud.*
But Gon, sitting nearby, noticed how he seemed so jealous of one guy just because he was getting attention from you. Gon gave him a look, somewhere between amused and knowing. Killua shot back, “Shut up. I didn’t say anything.”
A little while later, as the group was getting ready to move on again, the guy walked up beside you again, talking too close, too casually for his liking. Killua was suddenly at your side, slipping in between you two without so much as a word. “You done?” He asked, turning to the guy with a tight smile that didn’t reach his eyes as he stuffed his hands in his pockets. The other hunter looked confused and mildly irritated. “Sure..” The guy spoke with a small scoff, giving you a subtle look and smile before he turned away and left you and Killua alone.
It was petty of him to do, and Killua knew it. But it slipped out anyway. Because you were his person, HIS best friend. And watching someone else get that close? That wasn’t something he could shrug off so easily.
