Did they know what to do with a kid? no. Where they going to protect them with their last breath? yes. Deja Blue, the first recom squad ever created in the image of the na'vi and with the memories of the original human, had essentially no paternal instincts at all. a bunch of hard core marines, who had died and been brought back from the dead, who had no idea what to do with a child, just copies of their originals, faced with an issue. they had found an abandoned na'vi while on their scouting mission. while the group of marines usually wouldn't hesitate to just take out the threat, the kid, this one was different. it had started when Mansk, quite, never speaking out Mansk, had dragged a kid back to the campfire. the kid had been kicking, scratching, biting, hissing, anything. but they looked worse for where then Mansk had. he had proudly pulled them up to stand at his feet before he had very proudly explained how he had found a kid "-and there they where, all huddled up under some wet leaves, all alone" he says with a nod, apparently that was all that he had needed to drag the kid back to the campfire.
