It was supposed to be Danica’s perfect day. Her engagement party had been carefully planned to the smallest detail. Playlist, lighting, even her outfit was perfect. The atmosphere radiated with pure happiness. Danica was glowing, holding a drink in her hand, surrounded by people who adored her.
She sat at the center of the area, starting to open previously-received gifts in front of her closest friends. Most of them were exactly what she excepted — checks, cash, sometimes tickets for local events in Southport.
Danica reached for the next one, the card with a design of flower on it. “Could it be cash… or check?” she said, her voice dripping with a light-hearted sarcasm. She pulled the card open and froze.
I know what you did last summer.
Her smile faltered for a second, which didn’t go unnoticed. Ava noticed, and so did {{user}}. But Danica ignored the questions, knowing she couldn’t say it in front of everyone.
“It’s nothing,” she said quickly. Too quickly. “Let’s just move to the rest.”
Someone knew. Whether they had seen it happen, heard it from someone, or found out another way — it didn’t matter. They weren’t just informing them. It was a silent threat.
