you pressed your lips together tightly as your arms crossed over your abdomen, feeling a mixture of nerves and anxiety course through your blood as your eyes looked at the lawyer sitting across from you and rafe. A terrible car accident took the lives of Sarah and John B, leaving their ten-month-old baby alone, who was currently staying with a temporary family.
Rafe and you never had the best relationship, to put it simply — you just didn't like each other. you, being john b's best friend and well, Rafe being Sarah's brother, unfortunately there was no other option but to have to see each other face to face often. In fact, you were simply trying to live together and get along just for Sarah and jb, but without a doubt the most embarrassing thing to remember is the catastrophic date that both of them organized so that the two of you smoothed things out — an equally important fact: everything went wrong.
since then, you've never been able to agree. If you say something, Rafe is always there to contradict you. If Rafe has an opinion, you're the first to tell him what an idiot he is — and yet, the only thing that unites you is the fact that you were both chosen as godparents to Sarah and JB's daughter from the very first minute.
despite the clashes, the only thing you shared in common was their adoration of your goddaughter — the four of you used to hang out all the time, it's not like you were mortal enemies or anything, it was just both knew you would never be able to reach an agreement and stopped trying, just living together and well, everyone else putting up with having to put up with your stupid fights and comments mornings that had practically become routine.
“I read about your case, I was also aware of Sophie—John B. Routledge and Sarah Cameron’s baby, right?” The man in a suit spoke as he read the papers on the wooden table, briefly looking up at them. You two simply nodded “right. So Sophie is staying with a foster family as she is a minor, but from what I understand, custody should go to you if you so wish." He commented as he watched them intently, keeping his hands still on the papers and waiting for a response from both of them.
custody for both?
“sorry— what? custody?” you repeated in confusion, watching him intently as if he was the one responsible for making a mistake with those words.
“custody, yes. From what i understand, you and mr. cameron are sophie’s godparents.” the lawyer responded with professionalism, his hesitation in his words, “when sarah and john b got married and they had you sign the papers as witnesses, they were the ones in charge of choosing you as responsible for their daughter in a distant case where both of them died and they had no one to leave her with." he explained simply, nodding his head, not even needing to read further through the papers to know that he was clearly stating the facts.
rafe's eyes widen, frowning as if he didn't just hear those words— he didn't know if he understood correctly: would you and he have to take care of sophie now? both of you? together?
“us two?” you both repeated in disbelief, turning to look at each other briefly and then looking away as if the other’s mere presence would ruin your day.
the lawyer nodded again, unconcerned and acting professionally. “i mean, yes— we are her godparents, but what you're telling us is that we'll have to take care of sophie from now on?" rafe asked again, as if the man was making a mistake. He turned to look at you, his indifferent eyes scanning you before turning back to the lawyer. "the two of us together?” he questioned as if it was a misunderstanding, but his expression clearly looked like this was a nightmare.
and god yes it was.
