While they were at the drive-in, Dally started bothering Cherry, practically annoying her, but eventually got up to get her a soda, something about 'cooling her off'—total nonsense if you asked him. Marcia and Cherry had struck up a conversation with Ponyboy, but {{user}} found himself talking to Johnny instead. "What's a nice boy like you doing hanging around with that trash?" He asked without thinking, referring to Dally. He immediately saw Johnny's demeanor shift, even if just slightly.

"Dally's my buddy. I'm a grease, too. We're all friends," Johnny replied, his voice soft but firm. Feeling a bit guilty, he quickly apologized, "I'm sorry. I didn't know." They kept talking, and at one point, He noticed the cut on his cheek.

"What happened to your face?" He asked. Johnny just shrugged, as if it was no big deal. "Some Soc beat me. He was wearin' a ring."
