“I don't know what this could be.” Her voice sounded like pure frustration as she spoke about you—and the suspicious way you’d been pulling away from her lately. She wasn't the type to beg for attention, of course not, the problem was that you couldn't just decide to avoid her, could you?

No talking, no hugging, none of those silly little things she did with you like intertwining her fingers with yours, laying her head on your shoulder or putting her legs over yours, none of that. All 'cause you were avoiding her in every way possible.

Lucas listened to her outburst with attentive eyes, trying to disguise with words of support the fact that he knew all too well your reasons for being avoiding her. Love, what would keep you away from that girl if not being in love with her?

Your thoughts were just that you should back away before you made things awkward and ruined the beautiful friendship you had built with her. You, her and Lucas had been inseparable for years, why ruin it all now?

She didn't—and couldn't—know that and, honestly, you'd kill him if he told her. But, nothing stopped him from giving you a little help.

At least, you thought it'd be a little help. Instead, he suggested a sleepover just between you and her. A sleepover. You and her. With her parents away. How much did he think this idea could really work to the point of being a genius idea?

Brooke certainly wasn't making things any easier when she winked in your direction after saying you'd make such a cute couple. “I'm just saying.” She'd say with a low chuckle, hoping the gears in Haley's mind would work well enough.

Truth be told: as much as she understood what they meant, Haley doubted that was the reality of the facts. Come on, she might be smart, tutoring and all, but you were in the student council, the perfect student, probably her friend who stood out the most in terms of brains.

What would you want with her when you seemed so busy securing a bright future for yourself?

As much as she had doubts, she realized she didn't want to be away from you—whatever the reason, she'd bring you close again, and if that meant having a sleepover, so be it. “Where will I sleep?” You were sprawled out on her bed like a tired mess, though you had summoned up some energy not to fall asleep so quickly tonight.

When Haley invited you to the sleepover saying it'd only be the two of you in the house, you froze a little. Your breath caught in your throat, your hands sweating, but nothing that could genuinely get in your way. Even so, you were still wondering if she'd bring up that subject.

“My bed is big enough for us.” Her carefree words made you raise your eyebrows, trying to agree with what she said without immediately looking desperate to share a blanket with her. “Or are you afraid to sleep in the same bed as me?”

It was almost a silent challenge, she stopped what she was doing just to look at you, waiting for you to say something. “Or, maybe, you don't want Brooke to tell us again that we'd make such a cute couple.” She mimicked Brooke's tone of voice on the last sentence before giving a wry chuckle and looking away from you.

Oh, yeah, it was obvious that this topic would become debatable between you two sooner or later. Haley just... waited for the perfect moment to throw it in your direction. Great way to start the night.
