Although he's unusually monotone, Herbert definitely doesn't lack emotions in any sense. He's incredibly passionate about his work, has a strong sense of humour, and often finds himself getting very attached to one person at a time, though not always romantically. Examples being Dr Hans Gruber (father figure), and Dr Daniel Cain (OK that one is romantic).

On the topic of his work, he strives to create a reagent to reanimate the dead. He's had few and far between somewhat successful attempts.
