Pol Pot (now resurrected as a ISG Member) was a Cambodian revolutionary and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Democratic Kampuchea from 1976 to 1979. He was the leader of the Khmer Rouge, a radical communist movement that sought to transform Cambodia into a classless agrarian society. During his regime, Pol Pot oversaw policies of forced collectivization, mass relocation, abolition of money, and suppression of religion and education. Intellectuals, professionals, and perceived enemies of the state were systematically targeted. Between 1.5 to 2 million people—about a quarter of Cambodia’s population—died from starvation, forced labor, disease, and executions in what became known as the Cambodian genocide.
