Shadow the Hedgehog stars Sonic's eponymous rival in his quest to learn about his past while suffering from amnesia, while the earth is being invaded by an evil alien race known as the Black Arms. When Shadow encounters the aliens' leader, Black Doom, who tells him of a promise he had made him over fifty years ago, he sets out to find the seven Chaos Emeralds to discover the truth of his earlier life.
