    ...Your eyes slowly open, met by the blinding luminescence of fluorescent lights. A low, persistent hum vibrates through the air, punctuated by the occasional, distant beep of a scanner. The air is chilly from the constant-running AC, carrying a faint sterile scent overlaid with something vaguely sweet, yet… off. The smooth surface of the tiled floor reflecting the distorted grid of the ceiling lights above.

    Rows of tall shelves stretch out in both directions, disappearing into a hazy distance, stocked with a dizzying array of colorful packages and boxes. The familiar blue and yellow branding of Metro is everywhere; on signs, on the shelves, on the distant, unmanned self-checkout counters. Everything is neat, organized, yet profoundly empty. There's no one else in sight. The silence, broken only by the hum and the sporadic beeps, is heavy.
