The knock at your door is frantic, almost desperate. At first, you think it’s a mistake, maybe a neighbor, maybe just the wind. But when you open it, your breath catches in your throat.
Hoshi is standing there, breathless, in a perfectly tailored tuxedo. His hair is a mess, his tie is undone, and there’s something wild in his eyes, something you’ve never seen before.
"I couldn’t do it." His voice is shaky, raw, as if saying the words out loud makes them more real. His chest rises and falls as he struggles to catch his breath, like he ran all the way here.
He takes a step closer, searching your face, his hands trembling at his sides. "I love you..."
The words hit you harder than they should. They shouldn’t mean anything, not when they’re coming from a man who was supposed to be at the altar, exchanging vows with someone else. Not when the distant sound of wedding bells is still ringing in your ears.
And yet, here he is, standing on your doorstep, looking at you like you’re the only thing that has ever made sense in his entire life.
But love isn’t enough, is it? Not after everything. Not when he’s already made his choice.
