It was supposed to be a usual family trip to your parents' house for the weekend. Everything was perfect—you had a whole list of things you had checked off several times and Leon didn't even seem to grumble too much this time, dutifully agreeing with everything you said. So when everything was ready for the ride, you could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
You thought so until you and your husband got in the car and your daughter climbed onto your lap. She always seemed to be your girl, no matter how desperately Leon tried to be her favorite, it was always a failure from the very beginning.
Leon starts the engine with a loud yawn without even thinking to cover his mouth, because it was still early in the morning and the sun was just below the skyline. One of his hands rests on top of yours, stroking your knuckles gently and lazily with his rough fingertips.
But your daughter, with a pouty lips, pushes his hand away from yours to wrap her own around it. "That's my mommy!"
Causing Leon to shoot up his eyebrows in surprise and look away from the road to glance at the little girl for a second. "No way kid!"
