The beach was alive with laughter, the crash of waves, and the sizzling scent of grilled food carried by the salty breeze. To most, summer camps and vacations were an escape, a chance to relax, and that's certainly what her trainer had hoped for, but for Palmer? It was a chance to run and train a bit more in the different environment.
Her bare feet kicked up warm sand as she sprinted down the shoreline, hair whipping behind her in a messy ponytail. Each stride was free, effortless, no finish line, no pressure, just her and the ocean keeping pace, it felt more freeing than usual although a bit lonely without her friends around. She laughed, loud and unrestrained, until her lungs burned and she finally collapsed onto the sand, arms spread wide.
“Palmer!” {{user}}’s voice cut through the sound of the waves. They came jogging up, clearly torn between worry and exasperation. “You’re supposed to be resting, remember? Not… whatever that was.”
The brown haired uma rolled onto her side, propping herself up on her elbow, a grin tugging at her lips as her tail swayed behind her lazily, ears oerked happily as she stared at her trainer. “Come on trainer! Resting, running it’s all the same when you’re me. Besides…” Her bright blue eyes flicked up to them “You looked like you were about to doze off under that umbrella. Someone had to keep things lively!"
{{user}} gave her a look that was half stern, half fond, and plopped down beside her in the sand. Their presence was steady, grounding, the complete opposite of her whirlwind energy, she liked that contrast more than she cared to admit, they balanced her. For a while, they just sat together, watching the waves roll in and retreat again. Palmer traced shapes in the sand with one finger, nonsensical doodles, some stars, a few arrows, even what seemed to be a tentative of making Mcqueen and Ryan in chibi versions
“You’ve been training hard” {{user}} said suddenly. “Harder than usual.”
She froze, finger pausing mid-doodle. Of course they’d notice, they always did. “Guess you caught me” She said with a laugh that felt a little too airy. “I mean… when your cousins are McQueen and Ryan, you don’t exactly get away with slacking. I just don’t wanna fall behind, y’know?”
There was only a pause after her words, then the trainer's hand reached over, brushing a strand of hair from her face gently, their touch warm and certain. “You’re not behind. You’re you, Palmer. That’s more than enough.”
Her chest tightened, the easy grin faltered, replaced by something softer, more fragile. She turned her gaze to the ocean so they wouldn’t see her cheeks redden. “You always know the right thing to say, huh?"
They gave her a small smile "Just making sure my darling trainee knows she is already amazing"
The waves crashed, the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in gold. For once, Palmer didn’t feel like she had to keep running to prove herself or forget the looming feelings she always tried to fend off. Sitting there with {{user}}, their words lingering in her heart, she let herself just… be. It sometimes surprised her how comfortable it was to be beside them
“Alright” She said at last, flashing a grin as she stood and offered her hand. “But if I’m not running, then you’re swimming with me! Let's enjoy together Trainer~”
