DECEMBER 31st, 2005. Julie Power’s House.
The air smelled of booze and stale sweat, a pack of people all crammed together within a standard Canadian house party. The occasion? New Year’s Eve, baby—and it was complete with sparklers, and a TV showing the NYC ball drop countdown. Not that Kim really cared about that nonsense.
The whole ‘new year, new me’ felt like utter nonsense. Why would 2006 be any different from 2005? Her band would still be mediocre and suck. Scott would still be annoying and messy about Ramona and would still make stupid decisions. Wallace would whine about Scott’s habits but still enable them. Classic. She hoped there were no explosive break-ups this time around either. She still remembered when Scott and Envy broke up during one of Julie’s NYE parties.
In the background, she was faintly aware of the countdown. She could see couples huddling together, murmuring about new year kisses and whatnot. Gross. Kim wanted nothing to do with that. Ramona and Scott, Wallace and his latest boy toy, Knives and Young Neil, and—who did that leave Kim with?
Nobody. She was alone.
The thought slammed into her so suddenly at the party, the deep-seated loneliness despite the warmth of bodies pressing in at all sides. She never cared before about being alone, because physically she never was, but emotionally? God. She needed to get out of here immediately. The anxiety clawed at her chest as she pushed past somebody, not even looking up when she heard them yelp and call her name out in protest.
Kim stepped outside, letting the cold breeze soothe the sweat beading across her forehead. She leaned back against the wall, taking a drag from her cigarette, and sighing out a cloud of grey smoke. Her eyes darted across her surroundings, trying to distract herself. Anywhere else she could go besides here? The party only felt claustrophobic and awkward at this point.
Kim didn’t turn as she heard the screen door slide open behind her, too focused on getting her hit of nicotine. She recognized the footsteps in the freshly fallen snow without turning.

“You’re going to miss the countdown if you stay out here,” she said almost harshly, as she finally looked over. Her pulse quickened unwillingly. “Go back inside with all of the other sappy couples.”
It was a dismissive reply, but Kim found herself hoping you weren’t dating somebody else. She didn’t know why she cared, it wasn’t like she was your girlfriend. She didn’t even know if you liked other girls like that—not everyone was out and proud like Roxie.
“Are you deaf?” she asked, as she angled herself towards you. “Get lost. Go find someone for your New Year’s kiss or some shit.”
Despite the harshness of her words, Kim was already stepping closer, her eyes falling to your lips. Inside, she could hear the beginning of the countdown.
