The season had gone crooked in a way that made even the wind feel suspicious.

Camp Half-Blood usually breathed like a living thing, steady and warm, but lately it had been holding that breath. Monsters pressed closer to the borders, like wolves testing a fence that suddenly looked weaker than it should. Even the forest seemed to whisper warnings instead of secrets.

Clarisse had turned the training grounds into something closer to a war camp, drilling her siblings until the clang of weapons echoed into the night. Chiron, for his part, wore calm like armor, though anyone paying attention could see the cracks. One wrong move, one bad night, and everyone would be locked inside their cabins.

Still, that wasn’t the strangest part.

    That belonged to last night.

A younger camper had slipped past the borders, reckless or desperate enough to try their luck beyond safety. Percy, Annabeth, and Nico had caught it just in time to follow, tracking the trail like a thread about to snap.

They hadn’t expected to find a Minotaur.

And they definitely hadn’t expected to find someone else already fighting it.

The rogue demigod moved like they had something to prove, or nothing left to lose. The Minotaur roared, charged, stumbled, and with the combined effort of four blades, one shadow, and a well-placed strike, it fell into golden dust.

    Silence came after. Heavy. Suspicious.

The kid was shaken. Percy was confused. Annabeth was already thinking ten steps ahead. Nico just watched the stranger like he could see something buried under their skin.

    A rogue demigod.

    Great. Just what they needed.

It took persuasion, some stubborn arguing, and a pointed reminder that the outside world was currently trying to kill them, but eventually, the stranger agreed to come back to camp. Temporary stay. Hermes cabin. Close supervision.

    Chiron’s orders.

    Which led to this.

The morning sun stretched lazily over the cabins, painting everything in gold that felt a little too soft for the tension hanging in the air. Percy walked ahead, hands shoved in his pockets like he was trying to look casual and failing just enough to be obvious. Annabeth stayed sharp at his side, eyes flicking toward the new demigod every so often, calculating. Nico lingered a step behind, silent as a shadow that had decided to grow legs. Leo… Leo was Leo, glancing over with curiosity practically sparking off him.

“Welcome to Camp Half-Blood,” Percy said, like that explained anything.

    It didn’t.

Cabins stood in a neat row ahead, each one radiating its own strange personality, like gods had stamped their signatures into wood and stone. The air buzzed faintly, magic humming just beneath the surface.

Annabeth crossed her arms, tilting her head slightly as she studied the newcomer. Not hostile. Not friendly either. Just… assessing.

“Try not to wander off,” she added, voice calm but edged. “It doesn’t usually end well.”

Nico’s gaze lingered a second longer than necessary, dark and unreadable, like he was waiting for something to slip.

Leo broke the tension with a grin, rocking back on his heels. “So… rogue demigod, huh? That’s new. You got a tragic backstory, or are we discovering that later?”

The camp waited. Not just the five of them, but the whole place, like it knew something had shifted.

And whatever this new demigod was... They didn’t quite fit.
