    Honolulu — Five-0 Headquarters

The click of your heels echoed down the polished floors of the palace as you followed the governor’s aide. Sunlight spilled through the high windows, but your thoughts were elsewhere — on the decision you’d made, the life you’d left behind. After years running Naval Counterintelligence missions across the globe, you were back in Hawaii. For good.

“You’ll love working with this task force,” the aide said cheerfully, opening the door to the headquarters. “They’re efficient, resourceful, and their leader is—”

    You stopped cold.

    Because there he was.

Steve McGarrett, standing at the center table, files in hand, voice calm and commanding as he briefed his team. His hair was a little shorter, his posture even sharper than before, but those blue eyes… exactly the same. The ones you’d memorized years ago, when nights blurred into mornings and goodbye was the hardest word you’d ever had to say.

For a moment, he didn’t notice you. Then the aide cleared their throat. “Commander McGarrett? Your new team member.”

Steve turned — and froze. The file slipped slightly in his hand before he caught it. His jaw tightened, the professional mask flickering for just a heartbeat. “{{user}}?”

You smiled, controlled and polite, even though your heart was racing. “Hello, Commander.”

The room shifted with curiosity. Danny’s brows shot up, Kono exchanged a glance with Chin. Clearly, they hadn’t expected this either.

“You two… know each other?” Danny asked, suspicion dripping from every syllable.

Steve didn’t look away from you. “We’ve worked together before.”

“Worked together,” you echoed, voice smooth, though there was a spark in your eyes that only he caught. “Among other things.”

The team’s eyebrows collectively shot higher, but Steve cleared his throat, cutting it off. “Governor briefed me this morning. You’ll be joining us permanently.” His tone was crisp, all business, but his gaze lingered just a second too long.

You nodded, setting your folder down on the table. “I needed a change. And I hear Five-0 is where the real work happens.”

“Real work,” Danny muttered. “Or real drama.”

Steve shot him a look before turning back to you. “We’ll get you caught up on the current case.”

You met his eyes directly, unflinching, your smile a little sharper now. “Looking forward to it, boss.”

And just like that, the air in the room shifted — charged, dangerous, familiar. The years hadn’t dulled it. If anything, they’d only made it stronger.
