Ao Bing (敖丙, Áo Bǐng) is the deuteragonist (second main character) in the hugely popular 2019 Chinese animated film Nezha (also known as Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child or Ne Zha), and he returns in its sequel. He’s the third son of Ao Guang, the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea, and the reincarnation of the Spirit Pearl (one half of the ancient Hunyuan/Chaos Pearl). In this modern retelling, he’s reimagined as Nezha’s rival-turned-best-friend, adding depth to themes of friendship, destiny, prejudice, and breaking free from expectations.

In the film series, Ao Bing is born from the Spirit Pearl (the “good” half of the Chaos Pearl), while Nezha comes from the Demon Pearl (the chaotic half). Both are technically only about three years old chronologically, but the pearls gave them accelerated growth and maturity—so they look and act like young boys/teens. He’s raised in the Dragon Palace under intense pressure: his clan (the dragons) faces persecution and imprisonment by the heavens, and Ao Bing is seen as the key to reviving or freeing them. This isolation and heavy responsibility shape him from birth. Unlike traditional Chinese mythology (from Investiture of the Gods), where he’s just an arrogant dragon prince, the movies make him a complex, sympathetic figure who’s caught between loyalty to his family/clan and doing what’s right. Appearance In his human form, Ao Bing is depicted as a slim, elegant, and strikingly handsome young boy with a pale complexion, dark blue eyes, and long blue hair (often half-tied in a topknot with the rest flowing down). He has a blue mark on his forehead (symbolizing the Spirit Pearl) and sometimes subtle dragon features like small horns or scales. He usually wears flowing blue robes that give him a graceful, almost princely look. When he transforms, he becomes a massive, powerful blue Feilong (a flying Chinese dragon) with long whiskers. His design contrasts beautifully with Nezha’s wild, fiery red aesthetic—water/ice vs. fire/chaos. Personality Ao Bing is the calm, composed foil to Nezha’s chaotic, hot-headed energy. He’s often described as: • Restrained and uptight — Raised to suppress his emotions and obey, he comes across as cold, aloof, or even harsh at first. • Morally upright and compassionate — Deep down, he’s kind-hearted, just, and loyal. Once he trusts someone (especially Nezha), he’s fiercely protective and values genuine friendship above everything. • Burdened and introspective — He carries the weight of his clan’s expectations, which makes him serious, disciplined, and sometimes melancholic. He’s torn between duty and his own sense of justice. • Reserved but growing — He starts formal and detached but warms up and becomes more open as the story progresses, though he never loses his polite, principled core. Fans often type him as INFJ (introverted, intuitive, feeling, judging)—honorable, empathetic, but internally conflicted. He’s humble, fearless in battle, and has a strong sense of right and wrong, but his upbringing makes him struggle with self-identity and expressing emotions. In short: polite, cute (in the movie’s chibi style), strong, and quietly heroic. Abilities and Powers • Ice/Water Magic — As a dragon with water affinity and the Spirit Pearl’s pure energy, he excels at ice-based powers (freezing attacks, ice manipulation). • Combat Skills — Highly skilled fighter with fast reflexes, agility, and a swift but rigid fighting style. He uses spears or similar weapons effectively. • Dragon Physiology — Superhuman strength, speed, flight (even in human form), and full transformation into a giant dragon. • Spirit Pearl Powers — Extremely pure spiritual energy (no demonic aura), temporary non-physical existence, and mind-merging abilities in some scenes. He’s canonically a bit stronger than Nezha in raw power (Nezha has seals suppressing his demon side). Role in the Story Ao Bing starts as a rival due to the conflict between dragons and humans, but he and Nezha become best friends through shared loneliness and rebellion against fate. Their bond is one of
