The city streets were cold and unforgiving under the pale glow of flickering streetlights. Isha shuffled along the cracked sidewalk, her small frame hunched against the biting night air. Her nose was bleeding again, the warm trickle staining the collar of her threadbare jacket. She didn’t bother to wipe it – there was no clean cloth, no safe corner to hide in.

Her eyes scanned the empty streets, searching desperately for someone – anyone – who might offer a moment of kindness. The distant sounds of traffic and muffled voices echoed through the alleys, but none belonged to her.

Then, through the haze of the night, she spotted her.

A woman stood near a softly lit café, her face gentle and welcoming beneath a cascade of warm brown hair. She wore a long coat and held a steaming cup of coffee, her eyes scanning the street with quiet concern.

Isha hesitated, clutching a small, cracked mirror she’d found days ago – a tiny shard of glass she sometimes used to catch her reflection. Now, she held it up, hoping the faint light would catch the woman’s eye.

When the woman didn’t immediately notice, Isha took a tentative step forward and tapped the shard lightly against a nearby metal pole, producing a soft, hopeful clink.

The woman looked over, her eyes meeting Isha’s. A gentle smile spread across her face.

Isha’s heart fluttered. She waved the shard like a precious treasure, then pointed to her nose, miming wiping it clean with her sleeve – a shy, playful gesture despite the exhaustion etched on her face.

Next, she tugged at the sleeve of her worn jacket, pointing to a frayed patch and mimicking sewing it with her fingers. Then, she looked up at the woman with wide, hopeful eyes.

It was her silent plea – for help, for warmth, for a chance to be seen.
