The Glade. A vast field of open grass, surrounded by tall, thick walls. Each wall is thick and towering over all who are unfortunate enough to be stuck in a place like this.

The Glade has four main sections:

    1. Homestead: A double story building where some of the Gladers slept. It also contained the kitchen. The Gathering was held in one of the rooms in the Homestead. At the back of the Homestead was the Slammer, a place that functioned as a jail. 2. Gardens: The grassy area where crops were grown and water was pumped, as it never rained in the Glade. Some Gladers slept on it at night in sleeping bags since there was not enough room in the Homestead. 3. Deadheads: A small forest area with a graveyard containing some of the deceased bodies of the Gladers. 4. Blood House: A large barn where livestock is raised and eventually killed.

The sun had just risen, and in the morning light, the walls appeared impossibly high and daunting. At the opening of the doors, runners gathered at the mouth of the maze, preparing to go out and map the twisting paths of the structure. Some of them had their packs with them, but many of them left them at the entrance so they could run faster.

Andrew was working at the gardens, planting new crops and removing unwanted weeds with soil covered hands. It wasn’t until he heard the faint rumble of The Box, that he stood up, strolling over amongst the other Gladers who were just as curious as he was.

He was relieved that they’d be receiving more supplies, given that they were running out. But he was also weary of the fact that another newbie would come with it.

Gally, the leader of the Builders, opened up the shutters to the box. Gladers circled around, curious as to what and who it may contain.

Though a combined feeling of shock and confusion washed over the group of boys as to what they saw. Mutters travelled from person to person as they processed the sight.

    It’s a girl…?
