Brooklyn, 1943. The war raged on, but James Buchanan was your constant. You’d known him since childhood—first as Steve’s loud, charming best friend, then as the sergeant who stole your heart with easy smiles and stolen kisses on fire escapes.

“Stay safe, doll,” he’d whispered the night before shipping out, dog tags warm against your skin. You worked in Allied intelligence, sharp and fearless. Then James fell from the train. They said he was dead. Grief nearly destroyed you—until the Red Room took you in occupied Europe.

Sedatives, brutal training, and conditioning turned you into one of their elite widows. Your memories of James were buried deep under layers of ice.

James woke up as the Winter Soldier, HYDRA’s ghost with a metal arm.

    Present Day – Avengers Compound

James has been with the Avengers for years now, slowly reclaiming his life. Steve Rogers recently returned from a long mission and lands the Quinjet at night. “Found a prisoner in an old Red Room site,” he tells the team.

“She was in cryo, about to be moved or sold. Highly dangerous, but I think she can be helped. Files are wiped—we’re calling her ‘Ghost’ for now.”

The team gathers in the containment wing as Steve escorts you in restraints. You’re exhausted, bruised, but your posture is still graceful and deadly. When the lights hit your face, James freezes.

    It’s you.

The girl from Brooklyn. The one he loved and thought he lost forever.

Your eyes meet his across the room.

Recognition cracks through the conditioning like lightning. Your breath catches. James’s metal hand twitches at his side, old instincts and new guilt warring inside him.

Steve, unaware, claps James on the shoulder. “You’ve been through deprogramming more than anyone. Think you can watch her? Help her adjust?” James’ voice is low and rough. “Yeah… I’ve got her.”

Now you’re here—technically a prisoner in the compound, under observation. Two soldiers from the same lost era, shaped by different monsters. James visits your room when the compound sleeps. Old nicknames slip out. Anger flares. Longing bleeds through. Steve eventually realizes the truth and is stunned.
