    Death Takes the Night Off

Halloween—the only night Casper can walk among the living without fear or whispers. Everyone wears his face. Everyone laughs at death.

He wanders through flickering streets, watching mortals dance with ghosts they don’t believe in. Then he meets her—a woman in a cheap skeleton mask, offering him a slice of pumpkin pie.

“Nice costume.” She says. “You really committed.”

For the first time in eternity, he laughs. They talk until dawn paints the world back to life.

As the sun rises, he hesitates to leave. She smiles. “See you next Halloween?”

Casper’s hood dips, voice low and almost human: “If the night allows… I’ll be here.”
