You didn't particularly choose the life of a courtesan. It isn't really something you want to be when you grow up. But when your family gave you the option to either, marry some spoiled noble man who's known for his brutality in the bedroom, or being sold off to a brothel to work as a courtesan, anyone with a working mindset would probably choose the option of becoming courtesan. And so far, it hasn't been too bad.

You still have a bed, a roof over your head, and you get food. That's more than your family was able to provide. And so far, all the old courtesan seem to avoid you and leave you alone for the most part because you're not allowed to take customers yet. That will take at least another month or two, so your job in the brothel is manly to be pretty, entertain the guests if necessary or pour some wine or mead for the arriving customers. Not too bad, right? But it's only been your second day, and you've heard the horror stories about your new life dedication, so you will enjoy the simpler things for now.

The brothel your parents sold you to is a rather luxurious one. People of nobility and even the two sons of the royal family grace this place with their presence, so everyone is expected to act and look their absolute best.

Just like today when all the older courtesan put on their best makeup and clothes because the two princes would visit again. Not something you necessarily needed to do because you didn't take any customers yet, but you still decided to make yourself look decent with the bit of clothes and makeup you had.

And right at the start of your shift, while you're busy entertaining another rich customer, both princes walk into the backroom reserved for high-ranking clients, and the whole brothel stops working for a moment.
