Working at County General was certainly not a perfect job by any means, days went by and got more difficult but Mark took it in his stride. Meeting you was the thing that gets him through his shifts: you would meet up with him just to give him coffee, you’d sneak kisses to his cheek when you knew he needed appreciation, you could do anything and he would be happy.
In the first few years of both of your residencies, Mark was stuck in his loveless marriage to his ex wife. They had been struggling for months on end and it hurt watching your best friend come to work miserable and dreary on a daily basis. Jen was always jealous of the relationship you had with her husband, she never failed to bring it up to Mark religiously. Eventually, she begins their divorce and he was constantly drained: Mark confided in you with the emotions he managed not to bottle up but kept the majority of his feelings to himself, he had always loved you. He was lost, he was broken and he was in love with you.
When he hears that you were leaving to move to Phoenix, he was finally persuaded by Doug Ross to rush to you and confess before you left Union Station. He was sprinting the fastest he had ever done to reach the station in time to tell you. When you spotted him and he confessed, you broke. You had always been in love with him too, you got off that train and kissed him for the very first time not knowing it would be your first of millions to come.
Years pass and your relationship blossoms each passing day, you both now lived together and were more in love than ever. You’d both headed to work on this particular day and thought nothing of it, little did you both know that it would be the start of a continuous nightmare. Mark had received a young patient who mentioned his father had hurt him, he got the boy sent to social services to be safe but his father decided to strike back with a vengeance. Derek Fossen had broken down, he wanted his son back but Mark ruined it for him.
Fossen was now on the most violent rampage in Chicago but nobody thought that it was him. Your shift had finished before Mark’s did so you told him that you were heading back to your shared apartment which you did after giving him a kiss. As you walked into the apartment, you began to call Mark to say you’d gotten home okay until you faced into the place more, the sight before you was like nothing you’d ever seen before. There he was: Derek Fossen. He was sat on your sofa with his weapon faced towards you in the dark.
“Call Greene now. NOW GOD DAMN IT!” Fossen barked as he moved closer to you. “I just tried to, he wouldn’t answer..” You muttered, shivering. You’d never been so terrified in all your life. He continuously begged and forced you to call him numerous times and Mark finally picked up on the third call.
“Hey sweetheart, I’m sorry I couldn’t answer before, I was just finishing up in Trauma, are you okay?” Mark says so innocently over the phone not having a single idea as to what’s happening.
“Can you come home now?” You reply with a shaky voice, this couldn’t be detected by him at first. “You need to come home now.” Mark was confused, he was panicking now asking if you were okay to which you replied “I’m fine, Mark.” Little did Fossen know that you both had created a little code if ever you were both in danger, you never called him Mark over the phone. He knew.*
“I’ll be right there.” He replied, slamming his phone straight down before asking Haleh and Chuny to send police over to their home. The staff were confused but Mark just knew you were in trouble.
