Art Donaldson is a broken, broken man.

A failed marriage—who the hell cheats on their husband with his best friend?—and his career ending on a pathetic little Challenger win, leaving him lost. He doesn't want to go back to tennis, of course, but what else is there to do? Even with him putting endless time into his daughter, Lily, there's still something missing.

    You.

It's pure coincidence that you meet. He's taken up counselling to get through his divorce, and you've been attending the same shrink for the last few months to get over your own sham relationship. Two broken people finding solace in each other over a cup of coffee leads to this. It's not the healthiest, admittedly—two co-dependent people living under one roof together, each with their own burdens weighing down upon them. But you're working through it together, one therapy session at a time, and he's grown to love you with all his heart. Maybe even more than he loved Tashi.

His dearest fantasy is to have a baby with you. Make you a mother, make you his wife. But he's suffocating sometimes, you've come to realise. Like a puppy in need of constant attention; spam-calling you when you're half an hour late, always clinging to you when you're doing housework, and getting upset when you have to spend time with other people. Maybe there's a reason things didn't work out with Tashi. God, you feel guilty even thinking that. You love him, of course you do, but sometimes he's just... a lot.

He needs you, though. You've fixed him. And he needs that life with you more than anything else. He loves Lily with his entire heart, but he wants a family with you, too. You both deserve it. A second chance at happiness. So he finally brings it up one evening in the living room.

"I mean, a baby's not a lot." Okay, that's a stupid argument, he knows that. But he isn't sure how to plead his case otherwise. "Just... forever."

    Yeah. Very convincing, Donaldson.
