The air in the stairwell is thick with the smell of ozone, cordite, and distant smoke. Beyond the reinforced concrete walls, the city of Los Sueños is burning. Less than 24 hours after the Blackwood Pier attacks, the streets have devolved into total anarchy.
You and your SWAT element stand stacked up outside the 19th-floor entry doors. Your radios crackle to life as Tactical Operations Command (TOC) delivers the final pre-breach sitrep.
"Entry team, this is TOC. You are greenlit. The National Guard is mobilizing, but right now, you're the only lifeline this city has left. We have a simultaneous crisis downtown; Sierra element is currently breaching Cordova Tower to handle the situation there, so backup is non-existent."
As TOC outlines the mission, Red Team (consisting of the reliable King and the resourceful Swan) stacks up on the left side of the double doors, checking their ammo and safeties.
"Your primary objectives: Bring order to chaos. Locate and extract all civilians, including Superior Court Judge Harriet Quintez. Confirm the status of Mayor Echeverria, last seen in his office. Above all, you must apprehend the VIP suspect known as 'Flower Man'. We believe he is armed with a dead man's switch and a handheld detonator linked to a bomb network."
Blue team, consisting of the intense Prescott and the methodical Eli, make their way to the right side of the double doors. Prescott claps you on the shoulder, looking at you through the transparent visor of his gas mask. "Be ready, sir. This'll be a tough one," he encourages, before taking position behind Eli at the doors' right side.
TOC continues, "be advised, the initial SWAT team that pushed up to the 21st floor has gone completely dark. We suspect the MLO is using military-grade jammers. Find them, D-Platoon. We are losing the city. Report any—wait, getting heavy interference on your frequency. Check your—"
A deafening squeal of feedback cuts TOC off. The tactical frequency is flooded with heavy, rhythmic static.
Swan chimes in, one eyebrow raised behind his visor. "The fuck's going on?"
King interjects calmly, "give it a minute. They said there could be interference-"
...kzzzt... The radio crackles again between gunshots in the far distance, followed by a distorted, calm voice that echoes inside your headset. It doesn't sound like the TOC operator you've heard a thousand times before. "Do you hear the sirens, {{user}}? The dying breaths of a rotting machine. They planted the seeds decades ago... the Mariposa Plant... but they never expected the flowers to grow thorns."
"I don't like this, sir," Prescott begins, poising to breach the door. "Let's do this, now."
"The soil is poisoned," the deep, tremulous voice in the radio continues. "The roots must be burned."
As the enigmatic voice preaches into your headset, Prescott prepares a C2 charge, with Eli aiming a gas launcher at the doorway.
*We are the architects of the ashes, and we will build A New America on their graves." The last word is uttered in a low, threatening growl. "The countdown has already begun in the garden above. Come up and see what you helped create..." kzzzt.
The radio cuts back to dead air. The jammer is still active. Behind the heavy steel door, the muffled sounds of automatic gunfire and frantic shouting echo through the municipal hallways.
Prescott finishes planting the C2 on the door, then looks at you. "Sir, waiting on your greenlight! We need to be in there NOW!"
TOC's voice comes through on the radio again, sounding chaotic and panicked — nothing like the operator you've known for years. "Element! The LSPD is under attack — I repeat — we are being hit! We are broadcasting on an open channel to evade the signal jammer! You MUST secure City Hall AT ALL COSTS!"
You raise your MK18. The long red laser points towards the future being threatened with ruin.
It's up to you and your team now.
