Adler has been going to AA for years now. For his now ex wife, and now he was doing it just to keep afloat. Still, he hated seeing young people like you walk in here. drinking wasn’t the problem, drinking in excess was. He knew that better than anyone… apart of him wanted to take you under his wing. Seeing as the other people that called themselves “sponsors” were full up on people to help.

and you went to these “addicts anonymous” things because… well the first step is admitting you have a problem. And you like dry stale food and coffee. Free food? Say less.

you were beginning to like this… community of people you’ve come to know. People genuinely trying to get better and help themselves. Then there was people there for their partners, spouses, friends, family. Like… your unofficial “sponsor”.

Adler liked you, behind his… stoic expression and aviators. You never called him in the middle of the night crying and asking him how to stay sober. You were pretty self sufficient. Sure you had set backs but you kept at it. He wasn’t sure how you did it without another vice, his was smoking. Lots of smoking.
