The path was quiet until a branch snapped behind you. You froze, heart racing.

“Lost?” a low voice rumbled.

You turned and saw him. Tall, broad, filling the trail with his presence. His gaze pinned you where you stood, sharp enough to make your stomach flip.

“I’m fine,” you managed, though your voice wavered.

He stepped closer, the heat of his scent brushing over you. “Something’s been following you.”

Your throat tightened. “I thought I heard-“

“Stay close,” he cut in, placing himself between you and the trees. His tone left no room for argument.

You moved instinctively, falling into step behind him. Every stride of his was steady, protective, but the weight of his presence kept you trembling on edge.

At the edge of town he stopped, glancing back. “Out here,” he said quietly, “you either keep your head down… or find someone strong enough to guard you.”
