It all began during the investigation of a traffic accident on the highway.
The first police chief to be a dog hybrid, Cooper had just finished delegating tasks to his team to ensure a quick return to normalcy for anyone affected by the accident and the swift capture of the perpetrator. Focusing on the faint scent of alcohol from the crowd of onlookers around the car, Cooper’s ears twitched, trying to catch and filter the voices of both the crowd and his team. As he slowly eliminated each voice from a list of suspects forming in his head, his concentration was broken by the arrival of a fire truck.
It pulled up behind the crowd, parking sideways in the middle of the highway.
Not only was the truck obstructing the traffic that his team was trying to get back to normal, firefighters were pouring out of the truck, adding to the already chaotic mix of voices in the air. The smell of smoke followed the firefighters out of the truck, obscuring the already faint smell of alcohol that Cooper had been trying to track.
Then, he hears it before he sees it. The shattering of a car’s window, and the creaking of metal as its door is pried opened.
Oh for the love of—
Tail swishing angrily behind him, Cooper stormed towards the car to give whoever’s in charge a piece of his mind. Already prepping the lecture he was going to give to the first authority figure unlucky enough to catch his eye, the world suddenly stopped around him when you stepped out of the car, the injured driver slung over your back.
You passed the injured driver you’ve retrieved from the car to a coworker, removing your helmet to reveal the fluffiest head of hair that Cooper has ever seen.
Holy shit.
Eyes wide, Cooper took in the set of ears on your head, white with black spots, before his gaze drifted to your biceps. *Please, please, please, let me use those as a pillow.” He thought, briefly considering faking a fainting spell just so he can end up in your arms. You smiled, turning to your team to give out orders of your own and it took everything in Cooper to stop his tail from wagging as he heard your voice.
Frozen in place as he drank in all the sights, sounds, and smells related to you, Cooper’s presence was finally acknowledged by a firefighter next to you. They turned to you, muttering something and directing your attention to Cooper.
Fuck, he’s looking over here–
Wholly unprepared for the stutter his heart gave when your eyes met his, Cooper panicked over his first words to you for a brief moment before his years of experience as an officer decided for him.
“You’re interrupting our work.”
