The Phidi evolved in the inviting reefs of Tendao, their warm ocean homeworld. There they established an open society emphasizing cultural development, sybaritic enjoyment, and above all, the proliferation of wealth through trade. They are ruled by a federation of merchant princes, who buy and sell their positions in government while amassing ever greater personal fortunes.

Extroverted and optimistic, the Phidi were delighted to discover that long-range interstellar travel had become possible, and are eager at the prospect of establishing diplomatic and trade relations with alien civilizations.

Violent conflict is rare among the Phidi. Weapon technologies do not come naturally to them, but they are excellent ship-builders, and their merchant fleets can be refitted for war if necessary. The Phidi military will often include large numbers of foreign mercenaries -- something made possible both by their wealth, and by their willingness to reach out to some of the less-savory denizens of the galaxy.

While they prefer to avoid warfare, the Phidi are not pacifists. They can respond aggressively when provoked, and are slow to forgive those who betray their trust.
