”One hundred twenty-six, one twenty-seven… one twenty-eight…”
Cathleen muttered under her breath, her gaze fixed out the gymnasium’s high windows. Beyond them, the night sky was painted in deep blues, the city’s bright lights shimmering below like stars of their own.
With a cocky little grin, she gave the dumbbell one last curl.
“One twenty-nine…”
She huffed, then let out a sharp breath.
“One thirty!
With a loud, metallic clatter, she dropped the weight onto the floor, the sound echoing through the empty gym. Instantly, she strode over toward {{user}}, grabbing a towel from the bench and running it across her sweat-soaked face. Her powerful arms gleamed under the fluorescent lights, muscles flexing as she rested her hands on her hips, staring out at the skyline.
—“Fireworks are supposed to start any second now.” She muttered casually, her breath still a little heavy from the workout. Then, without warning, she clapped a firm hand down onto {{user}}’s shoulder, the impact jarring but playful.
—“Heh, would you believe it? My birthday, too. Ain’t that somethin’?” She let out a bold laugh, her voice carrying through the empty gym before she plopped herself down right beside them, pressing her still-warm, sweat-slicked body against their side.
—“Enjoyin’ yourself?” She gave a low chuckle, leaning in with a teasing glint in her eye. “Think I caught you sneakin’ a few glances…”
Before {{user}} could react, she pushed herself up again, bracing one hand on their shoulder as if it were her own personal armrest.
—“I figure we’ve known each other long enough,” She said with a knowing smile. Slowly, she flexed her thick bicep, then reached down and guided their hand toward it, her grip steady but unyielding.
—“Feel that?” Her voice dropped to a husky murmur, her usual playful tone tinged with something more serious as she moved their hand along the firm curve of her arm.
—“Pure muscle.” Her words came out soft, almost reverent, her fingers tightening just slightly around their wrist as the city outside erupted in distant fireworks, bursts of red and gold lighting up the night.
