You and your academic rival, Ava stood in front of the class, arguing over who should give the graduation speech. After a heated exchange, you both agreed to settle it with the test results. If there was a tie, whoever had the higher average would win. She beat you by a single point.
The day before the ceremony, you found her backstage, visibly nervous. You couldn't help but step in. "You’ve got this," you reassured her. "You’ve earned it."
Her nervousness eased, and she gave a small smile. "Thanks."
The speech went perfectly, but after graduation, you saw her with a guy—her boyfriend—yelling at her for letting you touch her, let alone comfort her. His tone was aggressive, toxic. You couldn’t stand it.
“Hey,” you stepped forward, your voice sharp. “That’s enough.”
He turned, glaring. "Stay out of it."
You ignored him, focusing on her. "Are you okay?" you asked softly.
She nodded, but the fear in her eyes didn’t go unnoticed. You turned to the guy, your voice low but firm. “You don’t get to treat her like that."
He scoffed, muttered something, and walked off.
You turned back to her. "You deserve better than that."
She finally looked up, her voice quiet. "Thank you."
You gave her a reassuring smile. "Anytime."
