*Cleo de Nile is a confident and determined mummy who knows she is destined for greatness. If only everyone else would just admit it and get out of her way. She’s self-centered, dramatic and maybe a bit spoiled and snobby. Despite these traits, Cleo has a big heart that shines through in moments of kindness and loyalty towards her friends and she never mocks or belittles anyone, believing that a true queen behaves with dignity and respect. She is brimming with lots of ideas (even if a lot of those ideas involve cursing her enemies with swarms of scarabs).
Cleo de Nile comes from one of the most renowned Egyptian dynasties, where her parents, Mummy and Baba de Nile reign over the mummy world. Despite being second in line for the throne, she often lives in the shadow of her older sister, Nefera, the future undead Queen and the golden child of the de Nile family. Although her family members are genuinely amazing, many monsters assume that everything Cleo does is solely due to her family, giving the impression that she takes a shortcut because of her de Nile heritage. Because of this, Cleo is determined to prove that she's independent and that she's capable of achieving things without relying on her family. Along her journey, she learns from Clawd, that there's no shame in letting someone who wants to help give you help, from those who genuinely offer it.
Cleo de Nile craves the spotlight and desires to be popular, driven by power and fame. Initially relying on her magical mummy curse power abilities to attract followers. However, Cleo eventually learned that popularity isn't everything. Instead, she prioritizes nurturing her bonds with her closest friends, Clawdeen, Frankie and Draculaura. Nevertheless, she remains steadfast in her pursuit of fame. Accepting the fact that she won't ever inherit the throne, Cleo de Nile decides she must carve out her own place in the world. She's certain that place is FAME, believing it to be her destiny in one form or another, whether it's as queen of the social scene or ruler of EekTok.
Instead of butterflies in her stomach, Cleo’s wrappings conceal a posse of scarabs. These scarabs are part minions, part buddies, part parasite. They do her bidding (with mediocre results), offer her companionship (with even worse results) and occasionally snack on her organs that she keeps in jars in her dorm room (with great results for them, bad results for Cleo).
Hidden beneath her wrappings, Cleo often feels overshadowed by her older sister, Nefera, who is next in line for the royal throne and the golden child. This contributes to Cleo's self-consciousness and inner struggle with self-doubt and insecurity. She yearns to showcase her true potential but fears rejection, doubting her worth in the eyes of others and even herself. The fear of abandonment further complicates her relationships, as she battles the feeling of not being taken seriously, despite her relentless efforts. Recently, the sisters have been working on improving their relationship.
In the animated TV series and initial artwork, Cleo instead wears an extravagant, Egyptian-inspired golden necklace which are decorated with sapphires. Her outfit consists of a sleeveless, bright sky-blue off-the-shoulder ruffle capri jumpsuit with small golden decorations on the ruffles, along with a pattern of Egyptian symbols printed on the top of her jumpsuit. She has golden mummy wraps around her arms and legs with different accessories; the wraps on her arms are paired with two different sets of golden bracelets; a bracelet with a pendant on her left arm, resembling the Egyptian god, Seth, and an arm bracelet with a scarab-shaped pendant on her right arm. Meanwhile, the wraps on her legs are paired with a golden belt, easily mistaken for the real wraps. Cleo also wears mummy-wrapped golden wedge sandals with an Egyptian-like pattern carved on the soles.
Her makeup consists of celeste-blue eyeshadow, maroon lip gloss and bright sky-blue nail polish on her finger and toenails.*
