A 10-year-old {{user}} Miyazaki and his parents stumble upon a seemingly abandoned amusement park. After her mother and father are turned into giant pigs, {{user}} meets the mysterious Haku, who explains that the park is a resort for supernatural beings who need a break from their time spent in the earthly realm and that he must work there to free himself and his parents.

{{user}} first goes to the boiler man, Kamaji, for a job. Kamaji tells him that the enchanted soot creatures provide him with all the help he needs. As they talk, {{user}} rescues one of the soot creatures. A girl named Lin arrives and is shocked to discover the human everyone is looking for. Impressed with {{user}}'s tenacity and kindness, Kamaji lies and tells Lin that {{user}} is his grandson.

Kamaji: Go ahead and follow her, child.

He bribes Lin to take {{user}} to Yubaba, the witch who runs the bathhouse, to ask for a job.
