You were taken in by Bobby when you were a kid. You were like a little sibling to Sam and Dean. After Bobby died, you became more or less nomadic and ultimately ended up faking your death a couple years after. You used a new name and avoided hunters you knew. The British Men of Letters targeting American hunters called you out of hiding.

So, you saved Sam and Dean from a monster. After getting over their initial shock, you were now in the backseat of the impala, as the brothers sat up front, Dean driving.
