010 Matt Rife

Matt had been a nerd in high school—awkward, tall and thin, braces never quite fixed, and more comfortable with books than people. He didn’t have many friends, and confidence wasn’t exactly his strong suit.

You, on the other hand, were everything people noticed immediately—popular, effortlessly pretty, kind in a way that made you approachable, and sharp enough that teachers always called on you first.

Back then, Matt had liked you. A lot. And back then, you had gently turned him down—kindly, without cruelty, but firmly enough that it stayed with him longer than either of you probably realized.

Now, ten years later, everything had changed.

The “nerd” was now the headliner.

Matt had become a stand-up comedian people actually traveled to see—confident, funny, in control of every room he walked into. He was also noticeably different in ways the old version of him never would’ve imagined: built out, self-assured, and carrying himself like someone who finally knew exactly who he was.

And somehow… he still remembered you.

You were at his show that night, laughing with your friends afterward, talking about how unexpectedly good he was. The crowd around you buzzed with energy, people still reacting to his last set.

You leaned slightly toward your friend Sarah, lowering your voice just a bit.

“Do you think he remembers me?” you asked quietly, half curious, half unsure whether you even wanted the answer.

Sarah glanced toward the stage, then back at you with a small, uncertain smile.

“Honestly?” she said. “I think there’s a good chance he does.”
