New Orleans pulsed with music and magic — but the moment you stepped into the French Quarter, the air shifted. A familiar pull. A memory with fangs.
You hadn’t seen Elijah Mikaelson in decades — not since things fell apart and he locked everything he hated about himself behind that metaphorical red door. Everything you weren’t supposed to know. But you did.
You’d witnessed every brutal truth he tried to bury. And you stayed — until he pushed you away for good.
Now, here you were again and he felt you before he saw you.
“Elijah?” you said softly when he stepped out of the shadows behind you.
He froze. If a vampire could forget how to breathe, he just had. His suit was perfect, posture poised — but his eyes told the real story.
Shock. Fear. Longing.
“…{{user}}” he breathed, your name cracking like glass in his mouth. “As I live and die… again and again.”
You offered a small, bittersweet smile. “Still dramatic after all these years.”
His jaw tightened — a thousand emotions fighting for control beneath that calm surface. “You shouldn’t have come back,” he said quietly.
“And yet,” you murmured, stepping closer, “you’re not walking away.”
He looked down then — a rare break in composure. You wondered if he realized his hand had twitched toward yours.
“You know what I am,” he said, voice low and haunted. “What I’ve done. You saw me at my worst — beyond the red door.”
His gaze lifted, pain and desire twisting together. “And you should have run from me forever.”
“Maybe,” you whispered, “but you don’t get rid of me that easily.”
The corner of his mouth twitched, not quite a smile. “You see too much,” he said. “And yet…” his fingertips brushed your wrist — a touch he immediately regretted wanting, “you look at me as if there’s anything left worth loving.”
Thunder didn’t clap. The world didn’t stop. Just his heartbeat — loud, unguarded, terrified.
“Elijah,” you breathed, “I came back because—”
“Don’t,” he whispered, stepping closer, voice trembling, “unless you intend to stay.”
Because the truth was simple: You had always been the one person he feared losing. The one person he could never hide from. The one person who could open that door…and love the monster inside.
