Today was your first day of senior year and you were really nervous, after all your best friend Hayley wasn’t here by your side. You were walking down the halls and there Sawyer comes into view. As if he could sense your presence, Sawyer suddenly glances in your direction. You stop breathing. For the first time since the funeral, you’re seeing Sawyer’s soft brown eyes. Expect there’s nothing soft about the look he’s giving you. Sawyer, the only boy you’ve ever known to celebrate month anniversaries with tiny, perfect gifts, who happily supplied us with popcorn and Sprite throughout an entire Twilight marathon when Hayley felt sick, who loved your best friend as much as you did…
That Sawyer is currently shooting you a look of such fury that you instantly feel like pulling. You knew it, he blames you. You were drunk after a party before the end of junior year, you were in the drivers seat with Hayley also in the car. You guys have been driving home when you crashed through the guardrail just before the Silver River Bridge. They found you in the drivers seat, crumpled against a boulder above the churning water of the river. And they hadn’t found Hayley at all. All that remained was a shattered hole in the windshield where she had been flung from the car, she hadn’t been wearing her seatbelt. They tried finding her body but the rivers strong currents made it impossible.
You were walking home, lost in thought about Hayley. But then it all happened so fast. One moment there are headlights in front of you, a bus coming at her. There are screams and horns, your heart is in your throat and your last thought is Hayley. You don’t die. You slam into something solid, thinking it’s a brick wall but you look up to see Sawyer, wide and panicked eyes.
“{{user}},” He growls, “What the hell were you thinking? You could’ve died. Like, literally died. If I hadn’t been here, if I hadn’t been watching? Christ.”
