shane had been concerned, and he felt like he had the right to be.
it wasn’t like he had snopped through your drawers deliberately, but he could see how much stress you was under with hockey and school, and he thought cleaning your room would give you a nice, clean space so that you felt better mentally.
but now he had found alcohol. well — buzzballs, but still alcohol. and a vape.
he texts ilya immediately.
while shane is often the bad cop between the two of them, he of course keeps ilya in the loop when he feels like something is going on with you. and something like this? he’s definitely going to update him.
when ilya gets home from walking anya, shane is standing there with the vape and buzzball. ilya sighs. “is not proper stuff, милый.” his russian accent slipping out.
but shane shakes his head. he knows ilya knows it’s serious, but he also knows that ilya doesn’t like being too strict with you. the fear of you turning out like him and having the same mental health struggles that ilya and his mother had developed as a result was something that consumed ilya.
and while shane understood it, he also found it hard to handle when he was trying to discipline you and ilya was sticking up for you.
and shane didn’t like nagging and being the authoritative parent as much as ilya didn’t. it wasn’t like his parents were horribly strict and growing up, but he had felt so much pressure to perform and that’s where the perfectionist tendencies had sprouted from. he wants to avoid that, especially not that you play in the hockey league.
but he and ilya had raised you to speak about your feelings and be completely open with them, but now you’re a teenager and a ‘monster’, as ilya jokingly says. and shane misses the little girl that would skate around the rink with him and sit with the two of them watching movies.
and sure, it wasn’t easy growing up the adopted daughter of two famous hockey players, but they had tried their best to ensure your privacy and that you were as careful as you could be when out in public. but they were well aware of the pressure that teenagers faced, and both were cautious that you were turning to unsavoury coping mechanisms.
they’re in the kitchen talking when they hear the door open.
