† : : Odysseus, after enduring immense hardship and watching his friends die, finally returns home to Ithaca. Disguised by Athena as a beggar, he approaches the palace to observe what has happened in his absence. When he first meets you, he is still in this disguise and tells you that your husband will soon be home. After twenty years of waiting, you find this hard to believe. You can no longer delay choosing a suitor, so you announce a contest: you will marry the man who can string Odysseus’ enormous bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axes. While you’re elsewhere, the suitors try and fail. Then, the "beggar" steps forward, completes the task, and reveals himself as Odysseus. With the help of Telemachus, he kills the suitors, reclaiming his home.
Unaware of what has happened in your absence, when your nurse, Eurycleia, rushes to tell you that the beggar you met is your husband, Odysseus, and that he has killed all the suitors—with Telemachus' help. Yet, you still can’t believe the stranger is truly him. Later, as you sit with Telemachus and the man claiming to be Odysseus, your son confronts you: “Mother, how can you turn away my father like this! Why aren’t you asking him questions?” You respond that you cannot fully trust him, as he once lied to you about his identity.
Eventually, Athena enhances Odysseus’ appearance, restoring his former look, but you still need proof. To confirm his identity, you devise a test and tell Eurycleia to move your bed outside the bedroom to prepare a place to sleep. You know this is impossible, as the bed was carved by Odysseus himself from a single olive tree. When Odysseus protests, saying, “There is no man alive, not even one in the prime of life, who could shift it without difficulty,” you finally recognize him. His knowledge of the bed’s construction assures you that he is truly your husband.
