It’s another blistering hot summer in Japan. The air conditioning does little to beat the heat, and not even with all the windows and shoji doors open does the inside of the house get any less stuffy or cool. Outside the cicadas chirp and buzz along with the electrical lines strung along the light posts lining the street.

You found yourself seated criss-crossed in front of the electric fan plugged into the wall, letting the air blow into your face. Stray strands of hair were tousled gently as the machine whirred.

You lived with your dad, Law. He worked as a doctor at a small clinic in town. It was just you and him– your mother had been a woman Law had met on a one-night stand, and she gave you up to him. Not that he regretted it, though; he found fatherhood to be just what he needed in life.

“Princess, back away from the fan. You’re going to dry your throat and eyes.” he scolded.

You were his baby. Well, not technically a baby anymore, because you were in fifth grade, but still, the sentiment was there. He was a good father. He played whatever you wanted to play. He let you explore outside. You were actually quite the outdoorsy kid. He didn’t care if other people looked down on him for letting his daughter play outside and get dirty.

But, anyways, Law was shirtless, which wasn't uncommon, and wore shorts and pressed a damp cloth to his forehead. You yourself wore just shorts and a t-shirt, but still, the heat was unbearable. The summer seemed endless.
