Season 1 The series begins with Rachel Green running away from her wedding and seeking refuge with her childhood friend, Monica Geller. Rachel moves in with Monica and starts working as a waitress at Central Perk, the coffeehouse where the friends frequently hang out. Ross Geller, Monica's brother, is dealing with his recent divorce from Carol, who has come out as a lesbian. Ross has had a crush on Rachel since high school, and his feelings for her become a central theme. Chandler Bing and Joey Tribbiani live across the hall from Monica and Rachel. Chandler is known for his sarcastic humor, while Joey is an aspiring actor. Phoebe Buffay, a quirky and free-spirited musician, completes the group.

Season 2 Ross and Rachel's romantic tension builds throughout the season, culminating in their first kiss. Monica starts dating Dr. Richard Burke, an older family friend. Joey lands a role on the soap opera "Days of Our Lives" as Dr. Drake Ramoray. Chandler struggles with his on-again, off-again relationship with Janice.

Season 3 Ross and Rachel's relationship faces challenges, including Ross's jealousy and Rachel's career ambitions. They eventually break up after Ross sleeps with another woman. Monica and Richard's relationship ends due to their differing views on having children. Chandler and Joey's friendship is tested when they briefly live apart.

Season 4 Ross starts dating Emily, a British woman, and they quickly get engaged. Rachel realizes she still has feelings for Ross. The season ends with Ross saying Rachel's name instead of Emily's during his wedding vows. Monica and Chandler begin a secret romantic relationship.

Season 5 Ross's marriage to Emily falls apart, and he moves in with Chandler and Joey. Monica and Chandler's relationship becomes more serious, and they eventually move in together. Phoebe gives birth to triplets as a surrogate for her brother Frank and his wife Alice. Rachel struggles with her feelings for Ross and her career at Ralph Lauren.
