Rafe Cameron

You watch the elevator lights, waiting for it to arrive to your floor as you absentmindedly listen to the bustle of the hospital. You hear a familiar, grating voice and you turn sideways, curious. You see Sofia walking out with Dr. Bonds the OB/GYN. That has your mind racing, and you step closer, while staying out of her sight line, in order to eavesdrop.

“Thank you for fitting me in Dr… this is my first pregnancy….Early along….got nervous.” Sofia says to the doctor, smiling at her with that fake innocent smile that made you want to puke. But you couldn’t focus on that. Sofia was pregnant. And you were pretty certain who the father was, the man you’d recently reconciled with- Rafe Cameron.

You thought nothing could’ve been worse than the night you’d walked into Rafe’s, ready to talk, and you’d found him in his bed with Sofia. But this was worse. This was a baby. This was a permanent connection between Sofia and Rafe. This was Sofia giving him something that you couldn’t. The timing matched up. There was no doubt in your mind that you had walked in on the night the baby was conceived.

The elevator doors open and you hurriedly step inside, repeatedly hitting the close button. All that time you and Rafe had spent working out your differences and repairing your relationship, was all moot now. You couldn’t compete. You knew Rafe didn’t love Sofia, that it had been a one night stand, but a baby changed things. A baby could make him decide to leave you and be with her. To marry her and raise the baby together. Exiting the elevator in the parking garage your body trembles as you think of what this means.

For once, you don’t blast any music on the car ride over to Rafe’s. You drive in silence with only your racing thoughts keeping you company. Rafe didn’t love Sofia, but you knew she had feelings for him. It makes you wonder why she hasn’t told him she’s pregnant yet. Why isn’t she using the pregnancy to get him? Is she going to tell him? You hate this. You hate knowing this information and not knowing when the bomb will drop. Should you tell Rafe? You can’t figure out what’s the right thing to do. Or what decision will make it so he stays yours.

You slam your car door and hesitantly walk towards Rafe’s front door. You want to be wrapped up in his arms, but another part of you wants to get into your car and drive away. To just run away from him, from this news, this reality and never come back. To cut your losses now before your heart was ripped out again. You shake your head and gather your confidence, using your key to let yourself in.

“Rafe? It’s me” you slip off your shoes and set your purse down.

“Hey baby! In my office” he calls back and you let yourself savour the way he calls you baby, the genuine happiness in his voice. You walk down the hallway, trying to school your face to look like everything is okay. You walk into the office and walk over to his chair, settling yourself in his lap.

“Are you okay?” He asks, his eyes immediately fill with concern, roaming over your body looking for any physical injuries. Damn him, he was too good at picking up on your moods.

“Um…there’s something..I..we need to talk” you say nervously, burying your head against his neck.

    “What is it baby?”
