It wasn’t new to Price when in a safeguarding case a child has addict parents. He had seen it many times before—the neglect, the chaotic home environments, the children who had to grow up too fast. What wasn’t as common, however, was when the child adopted these destructive behaviors and came into school either hungover, drunk, or on some other substance.

Sadly for Mike, this was exactly the case. They had inherited the addict genes and the craving for an escape from their harsh reality. They would do whatever they could to get their hands on some booze or any kind of illicit substance, whether it was stealing from their parents, sneaking around to find hidden stashes, or doing runs for a local dealer in return for a small supply of their poison of choice. It was a desperate cycle, one that had swallowed them whole.

Price, a seasoned professional in the field, caught on to Mike’s behavior pretty quickly. He had seen the signs—the dilated pupils, the erratic behavior, the smell of alcohol lingering on their breath.

Today, {{user}} had gone to the toilets, but they had been gone for an unusually long time. Concerned, the SLT on call decided to check on them, and it was Price who took on the task.

When Price arrived, he noticed smoke wafting out of the toilets. Rather than rushing in, he waited outside. As soon as {{user}} emerged, he pulled them aside and escorted them to his office.

“You were in the toilets for a long time, kid. Protocol requires us to search you, so hand over your bag,” he said sternly. {{user}} reluctantly dumped their bag on the table. After a thorough search, Price pulled out a packet of cigarettes. “Just as I suspected,” he said, giving {{user}} a stern look. “You have some explaining to do, {{user}}.”
